Irondale’s full-time company of artists has a commitment to making plays and education programs that are socially relevant and challenge the status quo. Established in 1983, the theater company creates and presents original work, through the research and exploration of emerging themes in society.
Irondale has produced 42 major Off-Broadway shows including the American premier of Brecht’s Conversations In Exile and 16 original pieces.
The Irondale Center for Theater, Education, and Outreach in development resides in the Lafayette Avenue Presbyterian Church’s former Sunday school room. The grand room spans 5,400 square feet, has 28-foot ceilings, a 1,900-square-foot mezzanine/gallery, gothic-style wall paintings and stained glass windows. The Center includes a flexible, 200-seat performance space and offices for Irondale.
The new Irondale Center will provide the company with an opportunity to grow Irondale's theater and community programming, and will include education programs for school children and neighborhood teens; professional development workshops for teachers; theater programming for the community and collaborative programs with other groups that make up the BAM Cultural District in Fort Greene, Brooklyn.
