The Educational Alliance has been a settlement house, community center and social service agency since its founding in 1889. Whether it be education, employment, health care, housing, cultural enrichment, recreation or some other need, it can all be coordinated through this single agency. One of the oldest settlement houses in New York, the organization's long-standing mission has been to help people and families meet their basic needs and live richer, more fulfilling lives.
The Alliance's Art School has provided instruction in a wide range of visual art disciplines to people of all artistic levels and ages since 1897. Among the artists who have studied or taught at the school are Louise Nevelson, Adolph Gottlieb, Mark Rothko, Barnett Newman and Elie Nadelman. The school's gallery presents contemporary art exhibitions related to the Alliance, its history and the communities it serves.
