The Alliance for the Arts kicked off 2011 by celebrating emerging voices in the New York City arts scene. Whether by the audiences they serve, the content they create, the talent they foster, or the new perspectives they provide—these seven arts groups invigorate New York’s cultural scene with new energy and direction.
The Alliance's Friends of the Arts Party on Monday, January 24 celebrated the initiative these seven organizations have exhibited, and guests met members of the groups who are making it all happen.
The evening included cocktails, music and a private viewing of Christie's winter sale of Old Masters & 19th Century Paintings, Drawings and Watercolors.

Brooklyn
The Bushwick Starr began in 2001 as a developmental space for the New York-based theater company, Fovea Floods. In 2004, the company helped to fully convert the space to a black-box venue while producing a large-scale theatrical run. As the neighborhood of Bushwick began to transform into a thriving artistic nexus desirous of space and support, the group decided to open its doors to other artists. Citywide Youth Opera offers young singers in-depth musical, dramatic and interpretive training, culminating in a public performance of operatic works by the great composers from the Baroque through contemporary periods. The program is open to students ages 14 to 21. More -
Dances for a Variable Population

Dance artist Naomi Goldberg Haas choreographs dynamic concert dances with diverse communities. Her performing group, Dances for a Variable Population, aims to erase the border between dancer and non-dancer, returning dance to its initial wellspring: joy. More -

The Talea Ensemble advances contemporary music by bringing it to venues in New York and abroad while introducing works from overseas to New York audiences. More -

Tong Xiao Ling Chinese Opera Ensemble

Established in 2005, this company performs classic Beijing Opera works with a full orchestra and costuming for local communities, schools and colleges throughout the metropolitan area. A culmination of over 1,400 years of Chinese Opera, Beijing Opera is itself an art form that is 200 years old. Director Tong Xiao Ling's family has been performing Chinese Opera for four generations. Based in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, UnionDocs presents nonfiction projects to the public while also engaging emerging media-makers, theorists and curators in learning opportunities, critical discourse and creative collaboration.
